Walk into enough dispensaries and you start to notice it: the best budtenders have followings. Not on the dispensary’s account — on their own.
On Crushed, several of them have turned that trust into membership income, posting picks, restock alerts, and honest reviews their regulars actually act on.
Brands are noticing. A budtender with a few thousand engaged local followers is, increasingly, the most efficient marketing channel in cannabis.
Part of that is structural. Meta and Google ads are largely closed to cannabis brands, and most programmatic ad networks won't touch the category either. That leaves word of mouth, and the digital version of word of mouth — creator content — as one of the only scalable levers a brand still fully controls. Multi-state operators have taken notice: Curaleaf, Trulieve, and Stiiizy are among the larger names now running creator programs as a real part of their go-to-market, not a side experiment.
The pay structure is usually modest and tied to the store, not the follower count: a small hourly bump, or a bonus tied to what actually sells, rather than a flat sponsorship fee. That's a meaningful difference from a typical influencer deal, and it's a big part of why the recommendations read as credible instead of paid. A budtender promoting a product they don't personally rate burns trust with the same regulars they see every week — a cost a lifestyle influencer two states away never has to worry about.
It also explains why the format outperforms a logo. A budtender has product knowledge, a face people recognize at the counter, and a reputation that's genuinely on the line with the local customers they're talking to. That's a harder trust signal to fake than a discount code.
It's the exact mechanic behind Crushed's own Hype program: budtenders put up the products they're actually moving, other budtenders in the same market co-sign it, and picks that go unanimous — five or more hypes, zero passes — earn a spot on The Plug. The counter, formalized into a leaderboard.
