A Turkish lab found CBD shuts down the receptor driving HER2 breast cancer — in a dish, not yet in people
New in-vitro research shows CBD suppressing HER2 expression and triggering cancer cell death, and the effect got stronger when paired with an existing HER2 drug.

Researchers at Ondokuz Mayıs University in Turkey, publishing in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, tested CBD on SKBR3 cells — a human breast cancer line that overexpresses HER2, the receptor behind one of the more aggressive breast cancer subtypes. CBD produced a dose-dependent drop in cell proliferation, knocking HER2 gene expression down to 88%, 73% and 69% of control levels as the dose climbed.
Mechanistically, CBD appears to stress the cells' endoplasmic reticulum — the organelle responsible for folding proteins — activating markers (PERK, IRE1, ATF6) that push the cell toward apoptosis, or programmed self-destruction. Flow cytometry confirmed more cell death and lower overall viability across every CBD dose tested.
The number likely to get attention outside cannabis circles: pairing CBD with trastuzumab (Herceptin, the standard HER2-targeted antibody drug) outperformed either treatment alone. That kind of combination-therapy result is what tends to get a compound taken seriously in oncology research, even at this early stage.
The caveat is the one the researchers themselves flagged: this is cells in a dish, not a clinical trial, and they said plainly that "additional preclinical and clinical research is needed to establish safety and effectiveness before any potential use in patients." Nothing here changes treatment today. But it's another data point in a growing pile of in-vitro cannabinoid-oncology findings that's starting to justify actual trial funding — which is the real bottleneck for this entire category of research.
