Illinois doubled what you can buy, and sales promptly hit a record
Higher possession limits appear to have turned a flat market around, even as prices keep falling.

Illinois regulators say July set a new monthly sales record, and August came in up 9 percent from a year earlier, according to the state's 2026 annual cannabis report as relayed by Ganjapreneur. The dollar figures in that write-up look off next to the state's $456.4 million in fiscal 2026 adult-use tax collections, so we are not repeating them. Check the state report before quoting a total.
The timing matters more than the number. An omnibus bill signed by Governor Pritzker doubled purchase limits, and growth returned about a month later. The state's oversight officer called current prices the best yet for Illinois consumers.
That is the usual trade-off: more volume per transaction, lower price per gram. A market can post record dollars and still be a tough place to hold margin.
For operators, bigger baskets are a gift to stores with the staff and inventory to handle them, and a squeeze for brands that were relying on price to hold shelf position.
