JARS just bought its way to Arizona's biggest dispensary network

JARS Cannabis signed a definitive agreement on August 26 to acquire Sonoran Roots, adding the company's eight Ponderosa Dispensary locations — spread across Chandler, Flagstaff, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Queen Creek, Tempe and Tucson — to its own footprint. Combined, the two companies will run 27 stores, making JARS the largest cannabis retailer in Arizona. Terms weren't disclosed.

The Ponderosa stores will be rebranded as JARS after the deal closes, expected by the end of Q3, pending regulatory approval. But Sonoran Roots' product brands, including its Canamo Concentrates line, are staying put rather than being folded into JARS' own house brands — and CEO Michael O'Brien is moving into a new Chief Strategy Officer role at JARS rather than exiting.

Between them, the two operators already placed seven dispensaries on Leafly's 2025 Top 20 U.S. list, including the No. 1 spot — so this isn't a distressed-asset rollup, it's two well-regarded independent chains combining scale on purpose.

It's a template worth watching in a market where multistate operators usually do the buying: a state-focused chain acquiring a same-state rival, keeping the acquired brand identity intact, and absorbing leadership rather than cutting it. For Arizona operators sizing up the competitive field, JARS at 27 stores is now the number to plan around.
