Surterra is closing the greenhouses that supply its own stores

Parallel Florida, the company behind the Surterra Wellness retail brand, filed a WARN notice on July 21 disclosing 211 layoffs tied to permanently closing two cultivation and processing sites — a greenhouse on West Lake Drive in Wimauma and a facility on Hamilton Road in Lakeland, together more than 330,000 square feet. Wimauma accounts for 157 of the cuts on its own, including 43 production technicians and 27 cultivation technicians. Workers had already been placed on paid administrative leave starting July 6, two weeks before the notice was filed.

Surterra keeps operating its 44-odd Florida dispensaries. That is the part worth sitting with. Florida licenses vertically integrated medical marijuana treatment centers, which are supposed to sell what their own operations grow and process. Closing 330,000 square feet of that capacity while keeping every storefront open means the product is now coming from somewhere else, and Parallel would not say where. It also would not say whether these cuts are the end of it or the start.

The Lakeland building had already been sold to Innovative Industrial Properties for $19.6 million in a sale-leaseback, so this is the second time that address has been used to raise money. Sell the real estate, lease it back, then walk away from the lease — that is a recognizable sequence, and it usually runs in one direction.

Florida is not a weak market. It is the most concentrated one Crushed tracks, where five brands take nearly half of all tracked sales. Cutting 211 cultivation jobs in a market that size says the pressure isn't coming from demand, it's overcapacity and price compression on the grow side of a vertically integrated model. Any operator still carrying owned greenhouse square footage in a saturated medical state should read this WARN notice closely.
