New York vs Michigan median vape price
+178%
$50.00 vs $18.00
The median vape listing in New York is $50.00. In Michigan it is $18.00. That is a 178% gap on a product category where the hardware is broadly interchangeable and much of the distillate is bought rather than made in-house.
New York's number isn't a selection problem — the state carries 367 vape brands across 446 retailers and 72,576 listings, more SKUs than any state here except California, Michigan and Oklahoma. It is a cost problem: a young market carrying high tax and compliance overhead with limited in-state production to absorb it. Illinois sits just behind at $47.32 for the same structural reason its flower is the most expensive in the country — capped cultivation.
The floor belongs to the two least-restricted licensing regimes on the list. Michigan at $18.00 and Oklahoma at $21.64 are the same states that anchor the bottom of the flower table, which is the clearest evidence that this is a supply story rather than a category story.
Then there is the flip worth knowing before you shop. In six of the ten states a vape cart is cheaper than the median eighth. In four — Colorado, Missouri, Florida and New York — it costs more. California is the sharpest illustration of the first pattern: vape now outsells flower there by market share while listing about ten dollars cheaper, which means the category won on volume and price, not on premium positioning.
