Market Shift

Vape Just Overtook Flower in California. Nowhere Else Has.

Vape is California's best-selling category again this week — still the only one of the ten states Crushed tracks where it outsells flower. Everywhere else flower wins, and in Michigan it isn't close.

For the week of July 20–27, California's best-selling category by estimated sales was vape — 32.27% of the market, worth roughly $15.65M — ahead of flower at 30.48% and about $14.78M. That is a lead of 1.79 points, wider than the near-tie the two categories fought to earlier this month, and among the ten states Crushed's weekly rankings now track it is still the only place vape leads at all.

The closest thing to a challenger is New York, where flower takes 32.29% against vape's 28.79% — a 3.5-point gap in a young market that has been narrowing. After that the distance opens up fast. Michigan is California's mirror image: flower runs 66.39% of that market against 12.17% for vape, the most flower-dominant of the ten by a wide margin. Florida (55.26% vs 23.99%), Colorado (52.28% vs 22.73%), Massachusetts (45.36% vs 21.39%), Missouri (42.75% vs 26.29%) and Illinois (41.62% vs 28.22%) all keep flower comfortably in front.

The gap tracks with market maturity and with price. California has the country's most developed vape hardware and pod ecosystem, and per Crushed's price tracking some of the most competitively priced flower of any state we follow — which puts the two categories close to parity on cost per session. Michigan is the counter-case: oversupplied flower there sells at a median around $28 an eighth and simply out-competes vape on price, no consumer preference required.

Whether the flip holds is still the thing to watch, though it looks steadier than it did a few weeks ago. The lead has gone from a fraction of a point to 1.79, which is no longer close enough to reverse on rounding. If vape holds through the summer, California — historically the bellwether for where the rest of the country's cannabis market ends up — will be the first of Crushed's tracked states to have made the switch for good.
